In earlier engines the relationship was regarded as direct between displacement (liters or cubic inches) to horsepower output. For these reasons the largest engines were built to yield the most power. With changes to induction, fuel delivery, and other efficiency gains this relationship is not as direct. In other words smaller modern engines are producing much more power than larger engines.
