In the epithelium, cell injury and death associated with inflammation results in a regenerative response in remaining surviving cells that may show morphological changes resembling dysplasia e.g hyperchromatsia. This is similar to hyperplasia except that the total number of cells remains unchanged as cells are lost and gained simultaneously and therefore the number of cells remain the same. Atyptia refers to the abnormality of the cell but regernative describes that the abnormality is merely related to the process of regeneration within a tissue that was previously damaged and is in the process of repair. This is proven when the injurious agent is removed the tissue will revert back to its normal state. An example of this clinically is ulcerative colitis.

There's no fun in playing it safe. Why not try something a little unhinged?
