Defensive driving is learning to watch out for your vehicle and anticipating what another driver may do.
For example if someone cuts you off, defensively you would put two hands on your wheel and get ready to stop if needed.
Another example is if it is inclement weather out, say snow or sleet. Defensively you would install snow chains and drive slower than normal, in case someone has a spin out in front of you or they cannot stop. You would give the other driver plenty of space and use your vehicle's lights.
Another, if you are driving and it is dawn or dusk and a deer runs across the road in front of you. Defensively you are not speeding and you are paying attention as you drive. That way, if the deer runs out in front of you unexpectedly or a child runs in the road, you can stop quickly, if needed. That has happened to me early one morning, I am on my way to work and is getting light out, and a deer ran in front of my car, out of nowhere it came.
I was able to let it pass by.
Defensive driving is basically being ready for the unexpected any time you are operating some form of motor vehicles. You have to anticipate that if you are on a side street, a child or a person could run out in front of you.
If it is raining, that when it first rains, the road is the most slickest because of all the grease and grime on the road being washed up. Then when it first rains or rains, you anticipate that you or someone could hydroplane on the wet pavement. In that case, you let your foot off gas, GENTLY pump your brakes in case you need to stop. Keep both hands firmly on the steering wheel coz your vehicle's tires are riding on water, not the pavement. You will not be able to make a QUICK stop, you have to gently tap your brakes so your vehicle will not go into a tailspin into someone else lane.
