At what cubic inch does an engine go from a small block to a big block?

The Cubes inches of an engine don't determine if it is a small or big block.. The Physic size, mainly the Deck Height and bore spacing(not volume) determine it.Examples-from ford/chevy, late 1954-1990s(pre modular, LS):Chevy:small block- 9.025" deck ht., 4.4bore spacing, 265-400cibig block-(w and mark motor) 9.8" ht., 4.84 spacing 348-454ciFord:small block-(Y Block)- 9.77 deck ht., 4.38 B. spacing, 239-312ci.low deck block- 8.2" ht., 4.38 B. spacing, 221-302ci.high deck block- 9.5" ht., 4.38 B. spacing, 351ci.Big block-MEL block- 10.48" deck ht., 4.90Bore spacing, 383-462ci.FE block- 10.17" deck ht., 4.90 bore spacing, 332-428ci.385 series block- 10.322 ht., 4.90 bore spacing, 460ci.The largest production big block was the Cadillac 500, 10.81" deck ht and a 5" bore spacing. The largest small block is the LS base Z06 427ci.( 9.24 deck ht., 4.4 bore spacing.)Other big differences are the main journals and the weight of the engine. The weight and limit engine bay space is the main factors for the sudden jump in the size of small blocks. A 427 z06 engine aprox. 400lbs. vs. a 600lbs 427 bigblock.

What is the rod length for a 454 Chevy?

Stock rod length is 6.135 inches, unless it's a tall deck engine, in which case the rods are .400 longer (6.535), tall deck engines were used in big trucks like dump trucks and were usually 427 cu in, if you're talking about a pickup truck or a car it's most likely a short deck version. Deck height on a short deck big block Chevy is 9.800" from the center line of the crankshaft to the deck, deck height on a tall deck big block Chevy is 10.200" from the center line of the crankshaft to the deck.
