Either you've got cheap fuel, too much timing, or a buildup of carbon in the combustion chambers. Check the "knock sensor" answer a zz4 engine requires a min. of 92 octain gas, are you using the right gas?

From 1990 to 1995 Boss Hoss' were only available without engines. You supplied your own.In 1996 the Chevrolet ZZ4 350 cubic inch [5.7 liter] block was the standard issue engine in the bikes. The ZZ4 block is a crate motor designed and built by Chevrolet that creates 355 standard horsepower to the crank at approximately 6000 RPM. The standard short block is primarily made of steel while the heads are aluminum.
1996-2000 SBC 350 2 or 4 bolt main and ZZ4, roller cam, one piece rear main seal Apparently these blocks were actually used i a variety of vehicles, mostly trucks though with the 906 heads that breathed about 20% less on exhaust. The ZZ4's had 330 hp stock and aluminium heads (im pretty sure) and a MUCH better cam.
