A fitch barrier is a plastic barrel filled with sand often found on exit ramps, in front of bridge supports, and highway construction zones. The fitch barrier was created to decrease the damage on a car and its passenger when it hits something hard such as a concrete wall. A fitch barrier reduces the damage done by increasing the time it takes to come to a complete stop. This decreases acceleration. Therefore, the force lessens making the damage not as bad.
