Turns out it was a relay. I just switched the one for the fog lights(not equipped) with the one for the chmsl and it works fine

My 05 has a wire by the spare tire labeled ES-1 instead of CHMSL, color is white with tan stripe. Local Leer dealer confirmed that is correct wire.

Then you figure out why and repair it accordingly. Check the bulb. If that checks out, take a test light and see if you have power to it when the brake pedal is depressed. If you don't, then you probably have a wiring fault somewhere between where the wiring for the CHMSL splits off from the wiring for the other brake lights and the CHMSL itself.

You cannot replace the individual LED's as they are soldered behind the lens cover which is glued to the unit. Chevrolet states that you will need to replace the entire unit.
