Basically it blows more air through the exhaust of a vehicle to make the catalytic converters heat up faster therefore reducing emissions. If the engine is cold you may hear it running on some vehicles. Once it reaches operating temperature the pump no longer runs.

What is a air pump on a 1998 Z28?

I have an 1981 camaro and the air pump on that is an emission related part located on the front of the engine compartment. My understanding is that it pumps air to to make the engine exhaust meet the emissions requirement. These pumps are not in the older prior to computer and emissions standards. Another expensive thing next to the catalytic converter. Can thank the green groups.

What does secondary air pump do on a vr6?

The secondary air pump on a VR6 engine helps reduce emissions by injecting fresh air into the exhaust system during cold starts. This process promotes more complete combustion of unburned fuel, helping to lower hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide emissions. Additionally, it aids in heating the catalytic converter more quickly, improving overall engine efficiency and compliance with emission standards.
