To know for sure, You need to remove the big metal plate on the rear end housing and count the # of teeth on the BIG round gear / Ring gear. Then count the teeth on the small round gear / pinion gear that sets deep in the housing and runs on the big gear. Then divide the small # into the high # and that will be you gear ratio.
The drive gear is in the tail shaft of the transmission. The driven gear is on the end of the speedometer cable housing.
Check manifold housing and inner rubber housing of gear near timing belt. Peugeot parts and assembly pathetic.
I don't know what year, make or model you have but most transmissions have the speedo mounted in the tail shaft extension housing so, if you remove the tail shaft housing you can retrieve the speedo gear.
Yes, you can. But you would need to change a few items as well. Reverse gear and idler and mid-plate. You would also need the correct tailshaft housing and speedometer drive gear as well.
steel
it is only clipped into the housing and you just have to pull it out
I have the same problem with my 1995 Rodeo. I lost the speedometer and had a bit of a learning curve. I replace the speedometer gear and it work well for a few days and went out again. It cost about 45 dollars, (For the Gear) I was kicked out of a Isuzu dealer when I went back and talked to a mechanic about the problem. Luckily I managed to get the answer before I was asked to leave. He mentioned that the gear housing also need to be replace at the same time as the new gear. The reason being that it creates it's own type of wear in the housing. Being that the housing was metal I was bracing for the worst. I was shocked when the metal housing was 22 bucks. The other shocker was that I changed it out just out side the dealership. Its very easy to do, one bolt and it drops right down. I placed the new gear in and then the metal housing and was back on the road in less than 10 min. So the answer to the question is you need to replace the housing and gear at the same time! I was shocked that it worked fine after I replaced the metal housing that holds the gear in place. I hope this works well for you, it worked fine for me. PS. I tried a junk yard part first and had problems, buy new its cheaper. Best of luck Paul.
In the transmission tail housing where the speedo gear would be in an older version.
No. Several Things Go Wrong With Speedometers. Cable Break, Plastic Gear In The Back Of Speedometer Housing, Or In The Housing Of The Transmission. But No It Will Not Hurt The Transmission.
starter motor is mounted into the front of the bell housing this is also where the bolts to secure the starter go if there is a plate between starter and bell housing, it is a spacer to give correct clearance of starter gear and ring gear teeth
Gear is part of the outboard CV jount housing and is not separately replaceable. Geberally entire shaft known as halfshaft is replaced.
