The spark plug requires a very high voltage for the spark to leap the gap between the contacts and provide a source of ignition. The coil does this by changing the voltage from the battery/alternator from a very low voltage to a very high one through a process called induction.
if it is a waste spark ignition, and if they are companion cylinders (changes from vehicle to vehicle and motor to motor, if one and three both have wires running to the same coil, then they are) then chances are you have a bad coil. replace the bad coil and be on your way.
standing at front of vehicle look straight to the back top of motor,
BACK emf induced in a motor's coil that tends to reduce the current in the coil of the motor. The answer should be 'back'.
The coil pack on a 2000 Pontiac Sunfire is located behind the air intake hose. Just behind where the air intake hose connects to the top of the motor is where the coil pack is on this vehicle.
No.plane is not a motor vehicle.

the coil is behind the motor
coil too many rewind
A repair manual for that vehicle would have that information, or you can google it.
