When closed the coil "saturates" with voltage and when the points open the coil dumps its electrical load to the spark plug. If the points open at the right time then the spark arrives at the plugs at the proper time - then the car is "in tune"
So the points basically cause your car to have spark and have the spark at the right time.

Revving your engine past its shift points is never a good idea. Unless you are on a track day, revving your engine past its limits not only means consuming more gas, but your car starts revving heavily and if you continue to do so, you will damage your transfer case.
