Signs a clutch is going: Shifting gets harsh, when you shift into a gear and push gas pedel...nothing happens for a bit.....grinding noise (kinda like a wheel bearing). That's all I can think of, symptoms I had before my clutch went out.
Clutch chatter, clutch slippage and difficulty getting transmission into gear when stopped.
clutch slave cylinder.
2 symptoms depending on what has worn: 1. The clutch itself. Engine revs under high load, the clutch slips. Take off in 2nd gear, let clutch right out and hit accelerator. 2. The disengage point sinks lower and lower. If you have a hydraulic clutch, a seal is leaking.
Slipping of the clutch and a peculiar smell are the first signs of a clutch that is worn out.
A shuttering when the clutch engages
A burnt smell, higer rpms for the same speed. It will slip like crazy when going to a higher gear which puts more load on the clutch, hills will slip engine will reve and it wont move or it will crawl up it.
It should be self adjusting. If its slipping then your clutch may be worn. Or if it has other symptoms, there could be a different problem. It says the clutch system is self adjusting in my manual.
It will squeal when you are not using the clutch
a failing clutch will slip,in 4th or 5th if you floor it the engine will speed up without the car going faster
the clutch is not adjustable but you can take up some pedal free-play by going under the dash and locating the adjustable rod going from the clutch pedal to the master cyl
You should not attempt to replace the clutch yourself unless you have considerable mechanical skills. In this case, the problem is most likely that the spring holding the clutch pedal in place is broken.
