Diesel is let into the combustion chamber to start the engine. A bad or even disconnected glow plug will allow diesel to leak from the chamber into the exhaust. The fuel is then ignited in the exhaust pipe and produces a white smoke. Once the engine again warms up the white smoke will stop.

You will need to test for a shorted glow plug by making a test harness with a 15 amp fuse in it and applying 12 volts to each glow plug to see which blows the fuse. You will also have to replace the glow plug module/relay which is loacted under the battery shelf under the hood. Be very careful when trying to remove the glow plugs. Only attempt with a fully warm engine ( drive it for 30 minutes first ). Do not try to force them to turn, they will break.You have a problem in the glow plug system. The reason for this problem is the corrosion between the glow plug threads and the cylinder head. A lot of engines have this problem (in fact a risk at most engines, a lot of problem also with injectors and sprak plugs)) An excessive force with a torque wrench may cause the glow plug to break, or lead to damage to the thread.
