• eliminated horse flies (that bite and spread disease)
• eliminated horse manure, which could carry disease, did harbor flies and other vermin, was tracked into otherwise clean homes if you were not careful, and had to be removed from the cities and towns daily in a resource intensive process of street sweeping and cartage.
