Most common problem and easiest to fix is a dirty mass air flow sensor. Go to an automotive parts store and locate a can of Mass air flow sensor cleaner (it will be in an aerosol can). Do NOT use carb cleaner, brake cleaner, or any other solvent, as this may damage the unit, and they are quite expensive. Locate your air intake. It should be a tube that goes from the inside of the fender, or front of the engine, to the top of the engine. Somewhere along the tube there will be some wires that protrude, with a hose clamp on each end. This is your mass air flow sensor. Remove the hose clamps to expose the sensor itself. Then follow the instructions on the can to clean. Installation is the reverse of removal.
