It might be, it is in many states. The legal definition of what a homemade weapon is, is going to depend on the exact interpretation of state law. An aluminum Baseball bat and a piece of aluminum tubing with tape for a grip are not very different things in the eyes of a police officer looking at them in the floorboard of your car at 3 o'clock in the morning after a fight at a party.
The illegality of whether carrying a wooden sword is legal or not always comes down to intent. I can legally play baseball or cricket with a wooden bat, but if I decided to go out at night and visit someone with the same bat it could be construed as intentionally carrying an offensive weapon, because I am not looking to play cricket at night. Anything can be used as an offensive weapon, the law is about intent. Carrying a wooden sword is not illegal, it is what you intend to do with that sword.

You would need a softball bat in combat if there is no other weapon available. A softball bat is useful in combat because of the length of the bat and the hardness of the bat.
