It depends, when it comes to efficiency and environmentally friendly, electric car of course is much better, since even if you get the electricity from "dirty" coal, an electric car is 65 to 70% in energy efficiency, compare to internal combustion engine, which only 18 to 25% of energy from gas going to the wheel. (And on top of that, most coal plant is cleaner that the back end of the car anyway)
But as for driving, a pure electric car (not a plug in hybrid) will have no chance for a road trip from Toronto to Vancouver in 3 or 4 days. Driving back and forth to work may be all right, but even if they put a charging station all across the country, do you want to stop every hour or 2 from LA to New York? I think not :)
Price wise electric car is getting cheaper in the past couple years. Some say counting on the gas you save they are actually cheaper then gasoline car. That all depends on what are you driving now.
All and all electric car is good (and good driving too) if you don't do a road trip every summer. Plug in hybrid is the best of both world, of course (if they are cheap enough)
