I believe what you're searching for is the 'Yugo.' The Yugo was a car made in Yugoslavia and later assembled in the United Kingdom and the US in the late seventies.
Sadly, the Yugo ranked among the top fifty worst vehicles ever built. It also shared a similar notoriety for being so ugly.
Yugo's parent company, Zastava Autos, were so keen to promote their former Communist country's vehicle outside of the former 'CIS' that as part of a media campaign, they gifted virtually every registered vehicle owner in a small American town their own Yugo. The story was featured in a film called 'Drowning Mona' starring Bette Midler. The film was about as successful as the Yugo.
In addition to the car suffering chronic mechanical problems, it was considered to be dead ugly. Occasionally, one or two can still be found around the US or UK, but ultimately they're still rolling along in places such as Moldova, Bulgaria, Serbia, Albania, Romania, etc.
The Yugo brand and Zastava were eventually acquired by Fiat.
