Do not jamb on the brakes ... try to slow down as quickly as possible by downshifting to a lower gear. And yes, downshifting is possible with an automatic transmission as that is what the "2" and "1" are for on the shifter. You are going to be pulled hard to the right so hold that wheel steady so that you don't lose control. Once safely stopped, call for help. You might need a tow truck at this point to get you out of the softer shoulder.
