I hope you have air in the gas tank ... everyone does. The symptoms you describe may indicate a faulty gas cap. Heve it checked (tested) for functionality. Those sort of things wear out normally too, just like other things in your car.
a gas cap can not be this problem the gas gauge gets it reading from a float in the gas tank as it goes up so does the gauge. the higher the float the higher the gauge and the higher the voltage going to the gauge. the lower the float the voltage is lower so the gauge goes down. ether the gauge is stuck or the adjustable switch that is attached to the float is damaged. but it could be that a wire that always has 12volts is shorted to the signal wire going to the gauge because a signal wire the voltage changes and a power wire will always have 12volts. one example would be the wire that runs the fuel pump they are right next to each other
you should go to a car shop for that one!:)
Float could be stuck in the tank or the ground wire on the tank is broke.
I have a problem with my 2 door Toyota rav4 2002 fuel gauge. it reads empty when in fact it is partly full. When filled up at pumps it then reads only half full. What can I do to fix this.
In most cases the sending unit in the tank is at fault.
i would recommend getting gas when that happens. perhaps take it to the mechanic to fix the gauge
i have a 1990 ford ranger and my fule gauge always reads full, why?
check your conectors or the float might have a hole in it
I would assume that the wires are hooked up backwards
My 2000 GLS does the same thing. When I fill it it reads full for a few moments then goes to straight to empty. If I am going down the road I can shift into neutral shut the motor off and restart but the gauge does the exact same thing again. I was told it was the sending unit but have not fixed it yet. The guage works fine after some driving and the needle comes off full.
The gauge or sensor needs to be replaced.
Where is it stuck? on full or empty? if on full you got a bad ground, if empty you got a bad float.
bad fuel pump it could also mean that the fule ammount sencor is out.good luck.
