Each car was being built by workers assembling it one part at a time. The car would sit in one location while workers would carry parts to the vehicle and install them. Each worker was required to know how to assemble the entire vehicle and install each and every part. The moving assembly line where a worker only was required to know how to do one job completely changed how automobiles were built.

Most airplanes are made in an assembly line fashion similar to cars. Especially those made by Boeing and Airbus. Smaller, specialized planes may be made one at a time, yet for the larger brands, assembly lines are the most common and efficient. The plane will move from station to station, where pieces are added on at each stage.

When did assembly lines first take place?

The history of assembly lines goes back to shipbuilding by the Venetian Arsenal in 1104. In more modern times, Henry Ford made the method common, starting with the production of the Model T car in 1908. In the automotive business, Ransom E Olds produced his Curved Dash Oldsmobile from an assembly line from 1901- 1907. He mass produced 19,000 cars during that time. This was before Ford's Model T was produced on an improved assembly line starting in 1908.

Is the assembly line relevant today?

Yes. Cars and other items are still made using an assembly line.

How is the Model T an example of the assemblly line and mass production benefiting the consumer?

Because the assembly made more cars quickly, it drove the price of the car down. Thus, it was cheaper and more families were able to buy. Before the assembly line, cars were only for the rich.
