The mantlet of the Tiger I was 110 millimeters thick. Note that the tank did not have a sloped or slanted glacis plate, and thus the effectiveness of the armor was not maximized. The Tiger II had 180 millimeter armor, but this was sloped to increase its effectiveness and afford better protection. Use the links below to learn more.
The M26 Pershing tank had armor 102 mm thick on the front of the hull, and 76 mm thick on the sides of the hull. The turret was protected by 102 mm of armor (the same as the hull), while the mantlet (gun shield) for the 90 mm main gun was up to 114 mm thick. The M26 Pershing was one of the only Allied tanks during WWII with thick enough armor to take a direct hit from the German 8.8 cm anti-tank gun and survive.
Any typical tank will have armor much too thick for many small arms ammunition to penetrate.
In WW 1, the armor on tanks was not THAT thick, and a heavy machine gun with armor piercing ammuntion COULD disable a tank. They were NOT invulnerable.
Well I'm not entirely sure but the Russian T-72 has 12 inch thick frontal armour however the M1A1 Abrams uses composite materials equivalent to 24 inches. The thickness no longer matters on a tank there are equally strong materials such as that found on the M1A1 Abrams.
The French were the first to invent a tank with armor. It was Jean Baptiste Estienne idea to add armor and artillery to a Holt tractor.
armor
First you spelled armor wrong...and I dont give a crap!
King Kong could not kill the tank since the tank is so heavy and is full of thick armor for protection against grenades and fires. If King Kong managed to throw a boulder at the tank, the boulder would do nothing at all. The tank would fire out bomb-missiles at king kong, killing it.
