A vehicle with a prefix letter R was first registered with the DVLA between 01 Aug 1997 and 30 Jul 1998. So between 12 and 13 years old in 2010. A vehicle with a suffix letter R would have been registered 21 years before. Because of stockpiling and other reasons there may be a considerable time between manufacture and registration. The most accurate method of determining a vehicle age is by VIN.
R registration in England means that the car was made in 1998.
1994 - 1995
1997 or 1998

This car was built in Aug. 1984 making it 26 years old in Aug 2010
It depends if it was registered in 1993 or 1994? So, today being Friday 5th June 2009, a L-Reg car would be at least 15years old! HOWEVER, the first L-Reg came out in Aug-1972 which would make the car even older making it 36 years old!
