The manufacturer will tell you. There should be an engineering data sheet for your gearbox. If you want to know more, you have to look at the theory of gears and the material properties of the metal (or plastics) used in your gearbox

Second response/answer- (hope this is an improvement)

I have looked around and seems that for 95% cars post 1990 they are typically about 35-80Kg -this is typically for small hatchbacks to larger 4 wheel off road(SUV)types. But check with the manufacturer - as it does depend on your model - the local dealer might tell you with a phonecall to their parts or service department if you give them the reg. or VIN number(from under the bonnet). The gross weight of the vehicle is usually printed on the VIN also so this might give you a clue to the approximate weight.

Obviously for an S.U.V. its more like 80kg. 35Kg would be for a small hatchback like a Ford Ka etc. I recently went to a scrapyard and was able to pick up a typical gearbox with one hand - amazing how light they are now, the strength:weight ratio for modern alloys is really amazing. Back in the 60's&70's they use to weigh more than some modern engines but that was back in the cast iron days. If you have an older car(pre 1980) it is likely it will be heavier than 50kg.

To remove the gearbox from the car on most of them now you can take the gearbox away from the engine and lower the gearbox out- using tools like trolley jack saddles- these days- and a cross beam to hold the engine; as the gearbox mounting bracket usually holds the engine and transmission on the passenger side in one connection.

Remember that automatic transmission are much heavier, if you ever take one of them out and usually they are taken out with the engine, hence a crane is required in most cases for automatic transmissions.
