I would say indefinitely. It's not safe for obvious reasons, but your car won't spontaneously explode if it isn't fixed. Depending on the year and type of car you drive, it may throw up a "problem" or check engine light. Not a major problem in itself, but if there is a REAL problem, you may not know about it until service time or something happens.
how far can you walk on a sprained ankle?
bad speed sensor

What problems will a bad speed sensor cause on a 1999 Nissan Maxima
A bad transmission speed sensor will result in the transmission not shifting at the proper times. The defective transmission speed sensor may also cause the vehicle not to idle properly.
One of the main reasons a speed sensor can go bad on a vehicle is the location of where it is placed. Speed sensors are subjected to the elements. Road debris, dirt, water, and other things can hit it while a person is driving down the road. Speed sensors are usually placed near the drive shaft in the rear of the transmission case.
