The speedometer in a car runs based off the speed of the transmission. The gears in the transmission spin at a known rate for the speed the vehicle is traveling at. The faster the gears spin the more the speedometer goes up. If a person replaces stock tires with larger tires, then the tires will spin slower, which will cause the speedometer to read at a value that is less than the actual speed.

Well, they will fit on the rims and you can drive the car. You must change all four if you have an AWD vehicle or an axle set on a 2WD car. Don't even think about replacing only one tire with a different size. You will make the car unsafe and damage the running gear. You could put the smaller tire on to drive slowly and carefully to the tire store or garage. According to a tire size calculator (found in related links) your speedometer will read 3.5% faster: That is, you will be driving a couple of MPH slower than your speedometer says you are. You will change the handling characteristics of your car too. Now, if I was getting these tires for free, I might consider it but there is a reason that your car has a specified size tire. Why not use the size tire your car was designed to use?

So why would you want to use the wrong size tire?

Your speed is based on how many times the axle rotates and is calculated by the car manufacturer based on the wheel size. If you used a tire that was bigger than standard such that the outer ring that touches the road was twice as long, your speedometer would read half the speed. So your mph speed of the car remains the same, but the speedometer registers it as half.

Maybe, but the tire will be larger and cause incorrect speedometer and odometer readings. If the tires do still fit the car, some tire shops can recalibrate the speedometer. The size of the tires breaks down like this: P195 60R15 means a tire that is 195 mm wide, the sidewall height is 60% of the 195 (4.6 inches), and the wheel size is 15 inches. The diameter for that tire is 24.2 inches (15 inch wheel plus 4.6 inch sidewall (doubled because you have to account for both ends of the tire as you measure across) The 205 tire will be approximately half an inch taller overall (24.7 inches)

How does tire size affect the speedometer?
The speedometer is attached to a sensor that detects how fast the wheel is turning. This sensor is programmed to detect the speed based on a specific tire size (ie: manufacturer recommended size) A tire smaller than original equipment (oem) will have to spin faster to cover a measured distance whereas a larger tire will spin slower to cover the same distance. Meaning, compared to oem, a smaller tire will cover less ground in 1 complete rotation than oem and a larger tire will cover more ground in one rotation than oem. Since the speedo sensor doesn't know what tires are on your car it can only assume that the oem tire size is on there and therefore cannot compensate for larger it smaller tires than what's specified. Use a tire calculator to find out how far off your speedo is, or you can purchase a type of speedo healer.
