Their are two ways of fitting dual cooling fans depending on the manufacturer. These are as follows:
Two fans are fitted which both operate at the same time. This setup would be used on a vehicle that has a wide radiator with low height so that the fan area would be distributed across more of the radiator. By having two smaller fans instead of one large fan more surface area is covered.
The other method is two have two fans fitted which operate at different running temperatures. The first fan would usually be a low speed fan and the second one a high speed fan. During cooler weather you may only find the low speed fan works however in warmer weather when the radiator can't disperse its heat so well the high speed fan operates as well. These are operated by fitting temperature sensors that react at different temperatures. These fans may also operate as part of any air conditioning system fitted to the vehicle although some vehicles have an independent fan fitted solely used for air conditioning.
