I'm not sure on your particular model but in most cars you have to go to the garage door motor, open the cover where the light bulbs are, and press and hold the small red button until the small red light flashes. You can then go back to the car and hold the button until it picks up the signal, a few seconds.
This has to be done because the garage door motors create random codes and have to be set to an open state to pick up the new opening device.

To program your 2003 Honda Accord to your Craftsman garage door opener, first, locate the "Learn" button on your garage door opener unit, typically found on the back or side. Press and release this button, which will activate the programming mode. Next, within 30 seconds, push and hold the desired button on your Honda's visor remote until the garage door opener motor clicks, indicating successful programming. Test the remote to ensure it operates the garage door.
The link below is for Grand Cherokees, but the procedure is the same.
check to make sure it doesn't use watch batteries
First make sure the garage door opener is newer than a 1982 model. Press open on the garage door and press the control panel on the Avalon as well. After several seconds a light will indicate that the control is now synced to the car.
To reset the HomeLink garage opener in a 2003 Toyota Sequoia, first, ensure the vehicle is parked and the ignition is in the "On" position. Press and hold the two outer HomeLink buttons (usually located on the rearview mirror) until the indicator light starts to blink rapidly, which takes about 20 seconds. Release the buttons, and then follow the instructions for reprogramming your garage door opener as needed. This process clears any previously stored codes.
look in your owner's manual i did not get one with the van
This one is pretty easy. If you have an EX model, it has 3 buttons on the overhead console. That is the Homelink Wireless Control System. Information is available in the Driving Tips Section of the Manual. (Mine is a 2004 Sedona EX) At the end of section 5 are the directions for programing the on-board Homelink Wireless Control System. There are a couple different senerios for different type of garage door openers. Hopefully This helps!
