On early model VW's (i.e. 1949-1974) it's a bit involved. You have to unbolt the plate between the generator and the fan housing, and remove the fan shroud itself. Also, I believe the generator stand may come with the entire assembly. Obviously, you'll want to take the air cleaner off to make more room for yourself to work.
