You have to drop the oil pan from the engine, then it depends on the vehicle and engine. Some oil pumps are bolted right to the bottom of the block and are easy to get out after the pan is dropped, some are part of the front cover of an engine (type found mostly on FWD vehicles) and pretty much require disassembly of the front of the engine.
