Dont replace it just get rid of the car all together. I have one now that i have owned for the past 4 years and its been nothing but problems. Id bet the reason they stopped making the cougar in 02 was because of so many issues. if you have a manual trans get rid of it now. they are the most problematic.

Take the serpentine belt off and then take the crankshaft pulley off and you will need a puller to get the balancer off the crank.
The front bottom PULLEY on the engine is bolted to the blancer.
You will be able to find it right behind the harmonic balancer on the front of the engine at the bottom. .....................NO ITS NOT THAT IS THE CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR....THEYRE ON THE HEADS ON THE BELT SIDE OF THE ENGINE....
Clockwise to tighten, counter to loosen.

If it is a V8 then you will have to remove the starter to be able to see it. 1 Bolt holds it in place.The V6 will be on the passenger side of the front timing cover / Behind the harmonic balancer. 1 bolt holds it in place too.
