As with any major work, make sure you have the battery disconected and have the van on suitable jack stands( not a jack alone, never trust a jack alone)
The Rack is attached to the subframe with 2 big bolts and a pair of hoses, and 2 flexible Tie Rod ends.
To take it out find the steering column shaft and remove the 2 bolts holding the flexible joint and pull it off then take the two big bolts out and it will be loose.
you also have to get the 2 hydraulic lines off too, Then you just have to disconnect the tie rod ends on both sides and pull it out. some vans you may have to take the subframe loose and lower it but I don't think that's the case in the Aerostar.
make sure you top off your Power Steering fluid before you start it back up(fill the PS tank up and then while its still lifted up turn the wheel lick to lock to make sure the fluid is all replaced, the rack may come with instructions on how to bleed the system aswell), and also make sure you have your alignment checked and corrected after its all done as well as

Extremely difficult. It would be pretty difficult to replace a rack and pinion. You are probably better off having a professional do it, or even just buying a newer van.

How do you open sliding door on a 1996 Ford Aerostar Van that will not disengage?
Remove the top radiator hose. The thermostat is located under the hose inlet on the engine. Remove the inlet to replace the thermostat.
Use a large C- clamp to depress the piston enough to remove the caliper.
The 1995 ford Aerostar did not come stock with a factory amp. If your van has an amp then it was added aftermarket.
