Before you hire anyone, work out whether you actually need a writer — because a lot of people hire one to solve a problem that isn't a writing problem.

If your posts aren't ranking, the usual cause isn't the writing. It's that nobody decided what the article was for. Hiring a writer to produce more of the same just gets you more pages that don't rank. I've watched this happen: a client hired three writers, tripled their output, and their traffic didn't move, because the brief was "write about X" with no thought about intent.

If you do need one, the split that matters is research versus writing. Some writers can take a topic and figure out what should be written — what's already ranking, what's missing, how to structure it. Others are good at executing a brief you've already worked out. The first kind costs more and is worth it. The second kind is fine if you're doing the strategy yourself. Most hiring goes wrong because people don't know which one they're buying.

And that test shouldn't be a writing sample. Ask them to outline a real post from your niche. How they think about structure tells you more than how they write a paragraph.
