When a car is stuck in mud, the wheels lose traction, preventing them from turning and providing forward momentum. The mud creates a suction effect that holds the wheels in place, making it difficult for the car to move. Additionally, the lack of solid ground underneath the wheels reduces their ability to grip and push the vehicle forward.

There are a couple of options, depending on the degree to which the car is stuck. It sometimes helps to place long boards under the tires where the drive is. A flat, dry surface will allow the tires to get some traction and drive up onto dryer ground. The other option is to have the car pulled out of the mud by a wrecker or tow truck.
It is better to have less friction when a car tire gets stuck in mud or snow because less friction allows the tire to spin more easily and gain traction to get out of the obstacle. Increasing friction in these situations can worsen the situation by making the tire more likely to dig into the mud or snow.
