Use a multi-meter.
I do not know about the SL1, but often there is a relay for high current circuits such as headlights. You could check for proper operation of the high-beam headlight switch at the excitation terminal of the relay and check for headlight circuit energy at the output on the relay.
Swap another like relay or just buy a new one.
chiltons says it the number 23 relay in the fuse panel located under the hood near the drivers' side coil. i would like to know where the open circuit relay is myself lol
It is possible if the circuit breaker has tripped or is faulty. The best way to check is by unplugging the air conditioner, and plugging in a table lamp. If the lamp lights up, then you know that the circuit breaker is working, if not then it is faulty.
Need to know the year and what you are working on.
I am working on this, soon as I know exactly, I will post it here, meantime, there is none listed in the wiring diagrams for this vehicle, but there is a 'automatic shutdown relay', and this is in the circuit for the fuel pump....and I am waiting on an answer from the dealer about a 'fuel cutoff relay' which should be a fuel pump relay......There is also a 'starter relay' that can effect the fuel pump juice possibly.... I'll get back to you....
The question is so broad and general in its scope that the only possible answer is one that is similarly broad and general: You know that each object in a circuit is working properly if the circuit performs as it was designed and satisfactorily does everything that it was designed to do.
Take the relay out and hot wire the pump. If it works, its not the pump.
How do you know if it needs to be replaced
Don't know of a headlight relay but the headlight circuit breaker is located in and part of the headlight switch.
easiest way to check is to cover grill in front of radiator and start engine cover will restrict air flow and make engine heat up.by watching temp gauge you should have a fair idea when fan should switch on.if it doesnt switch on you know relay or swith is not working. you can then check switch with a test light to see if it has poer on both sides. pretty much test relay the same way relay will only test when hot enuff to turn on fan
== == It is an electrical fan motor. It needs electricity to run it, as well as a complete wiring circuit, with a good fuse and a properly working control switch. Check the fuse, check the wiring to the motor, check the control switch. Don't know how to do that? Take it to a qualified auto mechanic, who does know how, or you can really screw it up, trying to fix it yourself, and then STILL have to pay a pro to fix it.
