Not a good idea. What if the guy doesn't really HAVE the pink slip? What if he owes a lot of money to the bank and that's why he can't get the pink slip for you? What if he has sold it to someone else and given THEM the pink slip and you just get a bill of sale? No, go to the DMV and get a replacement title and have him sign it over THERE. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Do not ever buy a car without a "clean" title (without liens). I am not sure what the law in CA is but cars that are 20 years or older do not require a title in many states. Y-THINK-Y
In California, the seller signs the pink slip, or title, in the designated area on the back of the document. This includes signing in the seller's section and providing the date of the sale. It's important for the seller to also print their name and provide any other required information, such as the odometer reading, to ensure the transfer of ownership is valid.
I know in CA we can sign the pink slip and if you put the other person's name on it on your death it goes to them. NY may have something like that. Look online and see what the NY DMV web site tells you. The info should be there.

To register an out of state car in CA you have to go to the DMV. They inspect the car for compliance to our smog laws and other things. You will have to pay taxes and registration on the car. They just doubled the car registration fees so depending on the year of the car and type you could be paying a few dollars.
