Without a temperature guage, the most acurrate way would be to use a infrared temp. gun and aim it at the thermostat housing/radiator/water pump.

How do you tell if a voltage regulator is not working in an old pickup truck?

The best and easyest ways to tell would be to use a voltage tester/volt meter with the engine running. I would take the volt meter and hook it up to the battery and take a reading with the engine running around 1000 R.P.M. .The average reading should be around 13.50 to 14.50 volts DC (this is with a 12 volt system) the truck should have something on the dash to indacate the status of the charging system, some times its a amp gage or a bulb.If you have a bulb system, the light should be out while the engine is running. To check the bulb with the engine off,key on the bulb should be lit, this is a way to check the bulb. the bulb should also be lit while cranking. If you have a gage-the gage is either volts or amps. if the gage reads in volts the reading should be simler to the volt meter reading that was taken at the battery. If you have a amp gage-their usually have a zero in the middle of the gage, usually to the left of the zero would indacate a negitive numbernot charging,if the reading is to the right of the zero that would indacate charging(note:amp readinga are with engine running @ 1000 R.P.M.) also note the you ahould have all accories turned off.

How does the temperature gauge help in car?

Its just there to let you know that the engine is running at a normal temperature and isn't overheating. If your engine starts to overheat, you can tell then do something about it. Pull over and check, let it cool before proceeding to a garage, before it is too late and the engine is destroyed.

Could somebody tell you the right temperature for 3.4 impala 2000 thE CAR DONT HAVE THERMOSTAT THE TEMPERATURE STAY IN MIDDLE AND THEN IS GOING DOWN.?

Any Auto Parts store can tell you the correct temperature thermostat for your Impala. Probably it requires a 195 degree thermostat. One thing for sure is no thermostat is not what you want. Running without a thermostat, will cause the engine to not reach full operating temperature. The engine will not perform to peak efficiency at below normal operating temperature. Normally that is around 220-230 Degrees. Your engine is computer controlled and the computer bases fuel/air mixture and timing on the engine temperature. Install the correct thermostat.

Could anyone tell you if thermostat is broke would the temperature gage still work on the car?

Yes the temperature gauge will still work. If it stuck open the car will run cool. If it is stuck closed the car will overheat.

What would cause the temp gauge to bottom out and stay in that position and the fan on the motor to run constantly?

The thermometer that reads your engine temperature, I presume, is damaged or broken. Without the gauge to tell your fan how hot your engine is it will keep running as a 'better be safe then sorry' feature.

Put a new water pump on your 1989 Chevy blazer and now your temperature gauge reads 260 degrees can someone tell you what to do?

put a new water pump on a 1989 Chevy blazer and now the temperature gage reads over 260degrees help pleas Check the wire from the temperature sending unit on the engine block. Replacing the water pump would have nothing to do with that unless you pinched the wire somewhere or the pump is defective and your engine is actually overheating. I assume it is not and is running normal. If it is actually overheating, you either have a bad pump or the thermostat is sticking or you did not replace all the antifreeze. Leave the radiator cap off and run the engine. Check to see if you see liquid movement or comming up and out the opening. If you do see movement, the pump is good.
