You'll hear a noise similar to...cats fighting? if a wheel bearing is going bad. Also, the car will tend to pull to the bad bearing side, if it's a front bearing. If you're hearing noises that aren't "cats fighting" yet, touching the suspected wheel (under any hubcap) with a wet rag (since it could be very hot), right after stopping, then checking temp of rag, can indicate a wheel bearing failure.
