option one, look it up in the manual.

option two, count the sparkplugs or sparkplug wires.

option three, many vehicles have a sticker in the engine compartment, specifying the size and type of engine. V4 = four cylinder v6 = 6 cylinder i4 = four in line etc.

If it's a diesel, find the engine model number on the door sticker, engine compartment sticker or sometimes on the engine itself. Google the model number, find the specs.
