Engines are mounted to the car using bolts to secure the engine to a set of special mounts.

The mounts are made of different materials (Usually steel and rubber bonded together) to keep the noise and vibration down, yet built so the engine is securely fastened to the car.

Engines are mounted in the front, middle or rear of the car.

They are also mounted transversely or longitudinally ( Crosswise or front to back )

These different combinations produce weight distribution differences and allow designers to make interiors and bodies more ideal from styling and purpose considerations.

A small car with a mid engine transversely mounted allows for a small nimble well balanced sports car. ( The Toyota MR2 is a good example )

A longitudinally mounted engine of large displacement mounted over the front wheels is an almost ideal situation for a large commercial van or pick up truck.

I think if you look at any car on the street you will see what the designer was trying to accomplish with how the engine is mounted.

When the front of the engine faces the side of the vehicle what type of engine would it be called?

It isn't clear which part of the engine should be called the front. Most likely the front of the engine would be side of the engine at the front of the vehicle.A transverse engine is mounted so that its crankshaft is perpendicular to the length of the vehicle. This is how most engines are mounted today.A longitudinal engine mounting has the crankshaft in the same direction as the length of the vehicle. This used to be the most popular way to mount engines as many older engines were too long to properly fit the other way.

What does an in dash GPS mean?

An "In-Dash" GPS refers to the way that it is mounted to the vehicle. In-Dash means that it is mounted the same way that a car stereo or CD player is mounted in a vehicle. A lot of popular consumer GPS Navigation systems are not mounted in the dash - they are mounted by a suction cup to the windshield of the vehicle or some other type of external holder that is not original equipment of the vehicle.

How many oxygen sensors are on a jeep 4.0 engine?

Most 4.0L engines with federal emissions have two oxygen sensors located on the exhaust pipe before the muffler. One sensor is mounted before the catalyst (upstream) and one is mounted after the catalyst (downstream). Most 4.0L engines with California emissions have four oxygen sensors. These are mounted in the exhaust manifold area. Two are upstream and two are downstream. There is an emissions label under the hood of the vehicle that identifies the emissions type.
