I do not see how it could protect you anymore that it coud hurt you. Infact I would say having your door unlocked would be better. This way if you are physically unable to open the door yourself then people on the outside could.
The idea of locking vehicle doors, is to protect you from other people, not collisions. Some cars lock the doors for you, as soon as you move and only unlock the drivers door when you use a short press on the remote control keyfob.
