Have older Chevrolet with points distributor and have a HEI distributor want to fit HEI WILL it need anything else to work can I bolt it on and time it in does it need a module or justcoil ok?

i have a 1972 nova with a points distributor. I replaced it with an hei i had laying around. i opened up the spark plug gap from .035 to .045 to better utilize the increased voltage of the hei. i ran a wire directly from the battery to the hei(through a switch on the dash to turn on and off) as i knew that the points distributor wiring would limit the voltage(something about a resistor wire or ballast resistor) The problem i had was that the engine didnt idle well with the hei as it did with the points. however the hei ran better through the rpms(up to 6000rpm) so im still trying to research that problem Some motors will idle too fast/rough at manifold vacuum, in which case you will need to connect your vacuum advance to ported vacuum.

Where does the vacuum advance on the distributor go does it go to the carb or somewhere else?

It depends on the year of the car.....but if you are running HEI ignition (74 and later) it will run to the carb. It goes to a ported vacuum signal. You will find a ported vacuum on a fitting that is above the carb base plate. It should have no vacuum when the engine is idling but will have vacuum when you rev the engine.

How do you change over to HEI distributor from points?

It's a fairly simple procedure. The biggest thing you have to do is run a 10-12 gauge wire to the hot side of the coil in the distributor. The original small wire to your coil isn't heavy enough. Just make sure to wire to something that is hot only when the key is turned on. Other than that, run the vacuum advance of the HEI to a ported vacuum....not the manifold vacuum that the point style uses. Basically any vacuum port on the carb that is above the base plate.

How do you replace vacuum advance on hei distributor Chevy 350?

-Disconnect vacuum hose at old vacuum advance "can".-Remove distributor cap - wires can usually be left attached to cap, but red wire to cap may have to be disconnected to manipulate cap away from disty.-Remove ignition rotor.-Remove two ( usually ) screws attaching Vac. Advance can to distributor.-Carefully disengage vac. advance can lever from advance mechanism on disty.-Remove can.-Install new can;manipulate advance can lever ( rod ) into nub on advance ring before tightening screws holding down advance can onto distributor.-Install rotor.-Reinstall disty. cap - making sure 4 hold-down screws are seated securely.-Re-connect any wires disconnected from cap.-Re-connect vacuum line to advance can.Drive happily, with more power on hills.-J.Snick -- Question Authority --

Where is the timing supposed to be for a 94' Chevy 350 with HEI ignition?

around 6-8 degrees with the vacuum advance blocked off. electronic ignition has no vacuum advance! How does one blank off the electronic advance???

How do you hook up the vacuum hoses on a distributor to carburetor?

If it is a point type distributor you will want to hook it to constant vacuum...somewhere on a port in the base plate. If it's HEI you'll want to hook it to one in the carb body. Something that has no vacuum at idle but pulls vacuum as you give it throttle.

How do you adjust the timing on 1979 Caprice Classic?

That should be a 350 cubic inch engine with a carburator, HEI ignition with a vacuum advance. You will need to hook up a timing light to number one (1) cylinder. That is the front plug on the driver's side. Start the engine and let it warm up. There is an indicator on the front lower side of the engine. It is marked with the degrees. Disconnect the vacuum from the advance and plug it off and then adjust the timing to the desired specs. Tighten the distributor and plug in the advance. If you do not get an increase in rpm when the vacuum is connected, then the vacuum advance is bad.

On a 69 Pontiac GTO does the vacuum for distributor come from above or below the throttle plates?

your vacuum advance should hook to the outlet on the carb that sucks when you rev the engine, not to one that sucks at a idle. On pre HEI cars, the vacuum advance actually hooked up to vacuum at idle. Below the throttle plates. There is a fitting called a " intake vacuum fitting" which is used on the ram air model and on the basic model that when used it will provide stronger faster vacuum, be ready for a big change in off the line performance, but rougher idling.

Plug wire to HEI distributor diagram?

If it is a early model HEI. Then the inginition coil is bolted into the top of the distributor cap.

Will a Chevy HEI distributor replace a pontiac points distributor?

no

What is the RPM when checking 1975 engine with hei distributor and plugging the air line when checking the engine so it reads 4 degrees btdc.?

You need a tachometer to determine RPM. If this is a GM V8 motor, you should have 8 degrees BTDC with the vacuum advance unplugged.

How do you know if you have a HEI disturbutor?

An HEI distributor has the coil mounted in the distributor....not separately. Simple way, count the wires coming out of the cap. 8....you have HEI. 9 you have a point set up.
