most crank sensors are for engine timing with the cam shaft, the distributor on at least 97' dodge and newer controls fuel timing.
12 valve engine: front above the crank pulley 24 valve engine: behind the starter.

one is on the cam gear and the other is on the crank timing belt gear. spark timing is on the crank to the rear of the engine
The EGR is not the problem The tone ring on the crank for the crank position sensor is different and the engine will not start.

Depends on the engine. Some are aimed at the flexplate, some aim at the crank pulley, and others aim into the block at the crank itself.
