Depends on the voltswagen on my 1973 beetle it turns counter clock wise for most beetles I would say the same. Easy way to find out is watch the timing belt and alternator belt check if it turns clockwise or counter clockwise you can be pretty sure the distributor turns the same way.

If you still want to be sure find your Firing order (for my volts it's 1-4-3-2) and look at your distributor. Follow around the distributor with your finger starting from ignition cable 1 to 4 then 3,2 then back to 1. (That's if your firing order is same as mine) From that your finger will be turning in either a clockwise or anti clockwise motion.

You could take off the distributor cap and turn the engine in the same way that you saw the engine turning. By putting a socket on engine crank and turning , watch which way the compass turns( I call it a compass I'm not sure what the real name is) . Although this isn't necessary unless you want to be thorough.

It all depends in the end find out what engine you have and it should give some detail if you have a search online.

I have a 1600 engine.

If you have an older volts I'm sure the distributor is counterclockwise although never touch or turn the distributors insides unless u want to have your beauty to turn into ragged old lady. Trust me i know it's just like a girl who drinks too much, she use to look good.

If you're talking about timing the engine I'd say there are plenty of videos online its quite simple in a beetle and it's a lot easier to watch than to read.

Picture worth a thousand words.
