No.
The differential transfers power from the transmission/driveshaftto the wheels/axles. If the car is rear or front wheeldrive ithas one on that axle. If the vehicle is all wheel drive it usually has one in the center on the car to transfer power front/rear. Some differentials are open and some are limited slip. Limited slip units are usually used in performance cars to get as much traction as possible.
They can come either with the limited slip or a open differential. If you cant find any of the original paper work there are two ways to find out. One is to take the VIN number to a dealer and ask them if it does. Another way is to place one rear wheel in a way so that it doesnt have any traction at all. If it has an open differential it will just spin and the Jeep will not move forward. The limited slip will give some traction to the other wheel and Jeep will creep forward. Good Luck.
if it is AWD (all-wheel drive) it has limited slip diff^^^Above answer is bad information:Most Subarus do not have a rear limited slip differential (LSD), but some do. Unless you have an STi or one of the rare older late 80s early 90s sporty Subarus, if you do have any type of limited slip differential it will be a 'viscous' type (VLSD).Jack up the rear of the car and spin one wheel while you watch how the other wheel spins. A Subaru with an LSD should have both rear wheels spinning in the same direction, but if it has the more common open-differential then one tire will spin in the opposite direction of the other.
what is a positive diff erential? do you mean a limited slip differential or an open differential? the limited slip is kinda like posi-traction in that both wheels get equal power instead of one spinning like crazy and the other doing nothing... the 87-89 turbo models had LSD and all the 90-96 models (turbo and n/a) had LSD
No it will not add hp, all it does is stop the diff from slipping and transfer torque to both wheels at the same time thus improving traction.
Open differential unless you ordered it from the factory.
YEs Mercury Sables have a differential all cars do front wheel drive cars it is built in to the transmission. The end of the transsmision where the axles come out of is the differential..
They are the same sensor, located in the rear differential. In my case, the sensor broke off and got in between the teeth on the limited-slip gears. This caused several teeth on the limited slip to break. Long story short, the differential had to be replaced (luckily it was under warranty). THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM FOR THIS MODEL YEAR.
The 1995 Chevrolet C1500 PU came equipped with multiple differential sizes. However all can use 80W90 GL5 gear oils. If the differential is limited slip a bottle of friction modifier may also be needed.
Jack up the which ever end is in question to get the tires off the ground. Put the transmission in neutral and spin one of the tires by hand. If the opposite tire spins in the same direction, you have a limited slip differential. If the opposite tire spins in the opposite direction, you have an open rear end. just pull the automobile off to the side of the road with one rear tire in the grass or mud and the other tire still on the road. now mash the gas and spin the tires if it's a open rear end then the tire in the grass or mud will spin only. if it's a limited slip it won't spin at all.
It is an option, not all willl have it.
