The oil itself is likely to cause no damage on its own. However, it's generally advisable to run nothing but synthetic oils in forced induction engines (such as VW's 1.8T). Often, standard oil will "gunk up" and inhibit the operation of the valves/lifters, clog up oil channels, and result in costly repairs or lots of time and creative words if you choose to remedy the problem yourself.
5w30 or 5w40 in moderate to warm climates where long intervals of highway driving are no expected, and 10w30 or 10w40 if long high-speed driving is expected. VW recommends Castrol Syntec Fully-Synthetic brand oils, but that's just their recommendation.
