Absolutely. You can shift into lower and lower gears to use what is called compression breaking similar to what semi's do going down long hills using a "jake" break. When your foot is not pressing on the accelerator and you go from, just for example, overdrive to drive it increases the RPM's of the engine without supplying it with more air and fuel. This cause the engine to expend more work trying to keep itself rotating that what it generates in the combustion chamber. This will cause your engine to fight against the inertia caused by your car moving thereby slowing down the car. You want to be careful to not shift down to soon or else you may cause excessive damage to your engine. You are better off using the breaks to slow yourself down unless you have no breaks, which if that is the case get it fixed or get a new car.

Should you let the engine slow you down in manual cars?

Yes! In a manual car, you should use the gears to slow you down. Road test evaluators and driving instructors encourage students to use their gears to slow them down rather than disregarding the gears and simply breaking. However, when shifting down, one must be conscious of the RPMs to avoid engine problems and jerking motions. If you shift down properly, the car should slow down gradually until you only need to gently apply the brakes to stop the vehicle. Obviously, in a situation where you need to stop quickly, one should use the brakes to bring the vehicle to a fast stop rather than attempting to quickly gear down.

How does gear ratio use function?

gear ratio can speed up a device or slow it down. The gears that make up the gear ratio can be used to go from small to bigger thru a series of gears and slow the drive down , say 30 to 1. Or start off with large gears going smaller and speed up the drive say 1 to 30.

What is the use of a crutch on manual car?

Hi, i guess you were meaning "clutch". The clutch pedal in a manual car is situated on the left-side of the break pedal. It is pressed down when shifting gears.

On a long steep descent which is better for your car gearing down with high revs or using brakes to slow down?

By far the best method to slow down is to look at the road ahead to work out if you need to slow down, and then to back off the accelerator (gas pedal) and let the car slow naturally so that you arrive at the next bend/junction (or whatever) without actually having to use the brakes or down-shift at all.Otherwise, use the brakes, they are cheaper and easier to replace when they wear out than the engine/transmission.

Can you slow down the bicycle by changing the gear?

No. Simply changing the gear without doing anything else won't slow a bicycle down. You can coast along without peddling and that will slow you down or you can use the brakes to slow the bike. Changing gears will affect the speed only if the current speed is slower than the highest speed you can reasonably attain with the selected gear - changing to a higher gear will help you speed up.

How do you enter into a driveway?

What gear do I use when driving uphill with an automatic transmission?

You're driving an automatic, the car should select the correct gear for you. However some automatics allow the driver to select low gears for use in slow moving traffic for example. If you feel you need more power when driving uphill then select one of the lower gears.

When should do you use the 1 and 2 gears in a 1987 Maxima?

Normally you never need to use the 1 or 2 on the shift indicator. There are rare instances when you would want to use them. When going down a very steep incline you might want to use 2nd gear to help slow the car down and use it as a help for your brakes. You can also use 2nd when starting out on a very slippery road to avoid wheel spin. 1st gear would be used when trying to get a car unstuck, by rocking it back and forth with Reverse & 1st gear.
