Jump starting is used when there is insufficient power in the vehicle to operate the starter motor.

The power supply can be ANY compatible power supply, but the most common are:

  • Another 12v car. Many HGVs are 24v, and some small bikes are 6v, and these would not be compatible
  • A 12v battery, either just a normal battery, or a specific jump start unit with built in leads
  • A 12v mains powered transformer with sufficient capacity. Most battery chargers cannot supply the required amps.

The other alternative is to turn the engine over without the use of the starter motor. This is commonly done by turning the vehicle over by putting the car in gear while it is moving, and is normally called a 'bump start'

Any means of getting the vehicle moving at around 5-10mph can be used, including pushing by hand or by a vehicle, a hill or towing.

There's no fun in playing it safe. Why not try something a little unhinged?
