In a car the heat usually comes from engine "waste heat". You just need to be running the engine.
The compressor is part of the air conditioner, which is used for cooling not heating.

My car is going through the same issue with the A/C. You CAN replace the compressor clutch without replacing the compressor, but the caveat is that you can't tell if the compressor is any good without a clutch. So basically you are gambling that the compressor will still be good by only replacing the clutch. Hope this helps!

You have a cycling clutch compressor. Turn the AC on max, let the car for five minutes or so, go look at the compressor. You should see the clutch engaging and disengaging the compressor as the pressure builds and drops.
