To be able to do this, the following criteria must be met:

• The vehicle must be registered as a farm vehicle and display farm truck plates. You cant take an ICC/MC registered vehicle and do this.
• The vehicle must be operated by the farmer, immediatefamily members of the farmer, or direct employees of the farmer. A W-2 employee is a direct employee; a 1099 contract employee is not.
• The vehicle must be used exclusively for the purposes of the farm to which it is registered, and may not be contracted out on a third-party basis, even to other farms. For example, a sod farmer could own a tractor-trailer registered as a farm truck to deliver the sod they grew - they couldn't use it to deliver another farmer's sod.
• It must be operated within a 150 mile radius of the farm which it belongs to.

With this criteria met, a CDL is not required. However, states may impose their own licencing requirements for non-CDL vehicles with a Gross Vehicle/Gross Combination Weight Rating of more than 26,000 lbs.
